Online dating effects communication

Although the study of intimacy in online social interactions is still in its early stages, there is general agreement that a form of online intimacy can be experienced in this context. However, research into the relationship between online intimacy and well-being is critically limited.Research suggests that people’s preferences, including in online dating, continue to exhibit patterns that confirm what sociologists suspected: people choose other people they have things in common with – which frequently translates into differences in terms of race, ethnicity, class, or status. In Dataclysm, Kevin Rudder, one of the founders of OKCupid, presents a relatively grim image of users’ preferences, showing that most people display racial and other forms of bias (the data from OKCupid has been leaked in the meantime, so, in principle, it is possible to use it for similar forms of analysis).Engagement in intimate social interactions and relationships has an important influence on well-being.However, recent advances in Internet and mobile communication technologies have lead to a major shift in the mode of human social interactions, raising the question of how these technologies are impacting the experience of interpersonal intimacy and its relationship with well-being.

We then consider findings from studies of different components of intimacy in online social interactions, specifically self-disclosure and social support, to indirectly explore the potential contribution of online intimacy to health and well-being.

So it comes as no surprise that more and more people are turning to technology to help them make romantic decisions as well. Stephanie Tong, assistant professor of communication studies at Wayne State, has been studying the association between romantic dating and computer-mediated communication for more than a year.

She and her team recently received a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation in September to continue her research.

"We're interested in looking at how new online dating technology affects the ways people initiate relationships and the ways they make decisions; when they decide who to date, and whether or not to pursue the relationship." Tong is collaborating on her interdisciplinary study with Dr. Tong's eight-student research team at Wayne State conducts their experiments in the Online Interaction Lab in Manoogian Hall, analyzing daters' survey responses and eye tracking data.

In some cases, users are able to signal what type of interaction (longer or shorter-term) they are looking for, which, in theory, helps minimize disappointment.
